Germany''s echanische Netzfabrik of Oldenburg, reports the recent introduction of a full range of nylon fishing nets with very small meshes and strong, heavy duty twine.

Highlights of the range are nets at 210d/12-6mmsq, 210d/60-10mmsq and 210d/192-21mmsq. Mechanische Netzfabrik says it was able to manufacture these difficult products by redesigning their netting looms so they could handle both single and double knots.

It says it uses ENKALON nylon for these high performance nets and is marketing to seining/purse seining and shrimp trawling companies. It claims the useful lifespan of this kind of heavy duty products is much longer than traditional ones due to much stronger yarns and good raw materials. Managing director Dr. Hannes Kremmin says they are also selling well in Scandinavia.

A family-run business, Mechanische Netzfabrik was founded just 100 years ago. Dr. Kremmin said: "Reaching the centennial of a factory means generations of innovation, good and bad times, hard work and joy. We live up to this family spirit and strong values until today."

Mechanische Netzfabrik says it is the only net factory in German-speaking countries which still has a full cycle production (twisting, braiding, net making, dyeing, net mounting/rigging). Dr. Kremmin's explanation is that quality and internationally acceptable prices have been their benchmarks for a long time. "So we were ready for international competition when the German markets broke up and export markets went down. Unfortunately not all our German colleagues were prepared. Furthermore it was very important for us to have founded our own machine-building division.

"This division specialises in the construction and manufacturing of machines, which replace manual labour by fully automatic procedures; e.g. fully automatic spool winders for netting machines. So our labour cost is comparatively low", he said.
