In June this year, Vónin delivered a new 2,048m pelagic trawl to M/V Jupiter FD42, for mackerel surface pair trawling.
The company tells World Fishing & Aquaculture that even after the first tow, Captain Emil Petersen realised that the trawl was extremely light to tow compared to other trawls of the same size, and, at the same time, had a very large opening. The crew onboard Jupiter also soon discovered that the mackerel catch was quite high compared to the towing time.
The trawl has similarities to the 2,688m trawl that was used by many ships during the summer of 2010 and 2011. The length of the headline and the footrope is the same, and the upper and lower wings are also identical.
Both captains on Jupiter have been out with the trawl and had great results, and the crew is also positive when it comes to the handling on deck.
By mid-September 2011, when the mackerel quota in Faroese waters was almost finished Vónin heard from Jupiter that they had just had one tow, which lasted two hours. And in this single tow they caught an astonishing 1,000t!
"This is the best pair trawl I've ever fished with! I also find it very interesting that the trawl is so light to tow. I'm sure we won't have any problem using it on our own trawl doors!" says Captain Petersen.
In October, Jupiter went out to look for herring. As they were not pair trawling anymore, they had rigged their doors. Captain Petersen was quite excited to shoot the big trawl with doors for the first time. They saw some herring marks and started fishing, and reported that the trawl worked perfectly. Trawling deep was not an issue and they were even able to tow the trawl with the complete headline on the surface. They also reported that the catches of herring were really good compared to surrounding vessels with trawls of the same size.
This pelagic multi-trawl from Vónin can be used for pair- and single trawling, deep-mid water and surface fishing for mackerel as well as herring. Captain Petersen also said that he would also definitely try out this trawl for blue whiting. Vónin told WF&A that it should have an answer on whether it works for blue whiting or not early next year when the fishery west off Ireland starts.
