Four new landing utility vessels (LUVs) are under construction for Damen Shipyards with the group convinced that these particular boats are ideal for servicing Europe’s sea-based aquaculture sector and that buyers will be best served with vessels that can be delivered quickly.

Twenty-two metres in length and with a beam of 8 metres, the versatile LUV2208s are being built by Coastal Workboats from Exeter, UK.

The collaboration between the two yards began with the construction of the first three LUV 2208s, all three from stock. Two of these vessels are now in operation, with the last one at the Kames ecological fish farm off the Scottish west coast.

Damen took the decision to build another four on stock following positive feedback from its clients.

The shipyard explained that the LUV 2208 has been specifically developed for the demanding conditions of sea farming, factoring in that large nets and cables need to be handled and that big harvests need to be loaded and offloaded. At the same time, the design allows for vehicles roll on and off a ramp that also enables beaching.

The vessels’ steel plating is extra thick Bulwarks and boarding ladders are large and heavily built for ease of operation at aquaculture farms. Heavy rubber fenders are fixed to the hull sides to provide better, lasting protection.

A wide hull provides sufficient stability to allow large cranes to be operated from the deck, with the ability to lift 2.5 tonnes at a range of 15.5 metres from the crane base or 15 tonnes from 3.5 metres.

Standard propulsion power is delivered through diesel direct Volvo Penta engines, including standard SCR and particles after treatment installation that also reduces noise and vibration.

The helm station accommodation comprises a day shelter and small galley, which can be extended to provide one or two cabins for overnight stays.

In a joint operation, Damen and Coastal Workboats also intend to open a service and maintenance yard on the west coast of Scotland, serving aquaculture clients close to their operations.
