Construcciones Navales P Freire shipyard in Vigo has floated a new marine research vessel under construction for the Environment Agency-Abu Dhabi (EAD)

This advanced oceanographic vessel, designed entirely by Freire, is intended to carry out advanced research work in both offshore and coastal waters. It incorporates sustainable technologies optimising fuel consumption and minimising pollutant emissions, as well as enabling silent operation at low speed.
This vessel is intended to make a significant contribution to the development and preservation of Abu Dhabi’s natural resources and economy.
The new research vessel will be able to accommodate 18 crew members and 11 scientists, and is being fitted out with fishing, chemical, biophysical, dry and wet laboratories, as well as a facilities for the diving team.
Jesús, Guillermo and Marcos Freire were present for the new vessel’s launch, accompanied by a delegation from the owner and supervision teams.
“We are very pleased to proceed with a milestone in the construction of such an innovative ship,” Freire Commercial Director, Santiago Sío, said.
He added that the yard has become something of a leader in the construction of oceanographic research vessels.
“We have first-line clients and references for a variety of vessels constructed, from multipurpose compact craft to specific research units,” he said.
The build contract was signed in December 2020 and work started six months later.
