The 21.9m trawler was designed by French naval architect Bureau MAURIC to provide a modern response to the practice of Danish seine trawling and pelagic or mid water trawling. It was built by Chantiers Piriou in Concarneau, France.

Prior to building the vessel, the owner and designer evaluated all requirements, proposed and compared several layouts, and defined and selected the most relevant equipment – all in accordance with the owner’s needs.

The result of this approach has resulted in an innovative concept trawler, particularly focused on three main objectives: to significantly reduce the gas oil consumption and operating cost, increase ship safety, and improve quality of life and work conditions onboard.

Features of Cayola include:

  • A new hull form specifically studied in terms of reduction of gas oil consumption, sea keeping and dynamic stability
  • A major change in the architecture of propulsion, based on two shaft lines with CPP propellers
  • A reorganisation of work areas and fish hold to improve the quality and preservation of fishing capture
  • An overhaul of the organisation of work areas and living areas
  • Specific noise insulation and vibration reduction devices with the objective of significantly reducing noise and vibration levels onboard

The tests and trials carried out in March 2013, prior to the delivery of the vessel, were used to validate the main architectural and technical innovations proposed by Bureau MAURIC.

These tests have highlighted the qualities of the hull, the benefits of twin-propulsion (in transit, during fishing operation, for manoeuvring, etc.) and have confirmed both the expected performance (speed, fuel consumption) and fishing operating conditions.

The noise level is significantly reduced compared to standard trawlers with a level smaller than 65 dBa in the wheelhouse and in the living areas (mess room and crew cabins).
