MAQ''s 5° vertical beam outperforms competitors'' 10° vertical beam by providing greater near-surface detection and tracking range on Tuna, according to a press release from the company which has been selling sonar gear for more than 20 years. It says it is the only omni-directional sonar available with a 5° vertical beam.

The joystick control on the arm of the captain's chair allows complete sonar selection without ever having to remove your eyes from the screen. It also offers scheduled performance improvements through partial system up-dates instead of having to replace the complete system.

A multi-language feature offers the user their language of choice, and the tonnage indicator not only calculates tonnage, but it improves these estimates by tapping into previous catch data entered into the sonar, MAQ said.

The MAQ 22/90 Switch-Over System means one set of electronics (which helps to minimise wheel house space requirements) can work with two different frequency transducers to provide a long range search capability (3,000m) and a short range (750m) high resolution net setting capability. After detecting the fish, the 22 kHz transducer can be retracted away to prevent the danger of net damage and the inexpensive 90 kHz transducer can be extended to observe the fish while setting the net. The users gets the benefit of two sonars and enjoys a cost savings of 25% on two separate sonars. Customers get free software updates at the MAQ website www.maqsonar.com.
