The Marine Stewardship Council (MSC), an international environmental organisation which identifies sustainable seafood through a certification and eco labelling programme, has reacted to the news that European fishing fleets face further drastic cuts in order to reduce the disastrous effects of over fishing.

The organisation warned that these measures are essential if the European seafood industry is to survive. MSC Chief Executive, Brendan May, said: "These proposals will dismay an industry which for years has been struggling to keep afloat.

Unfortunately, this latest round of bad news is the result of years of unsustainable management and failure to act upon repeated scientific warnings. Global overfishing is one of the most pressing environmental issues of our time and for some fisheries these measures will already come too late. For as long as it has been profitable to over exploit there have been no incentives to fish in a way which allows the environment, and therefore the fishing industry, to prosper. "
