Hear insights from Nofima at 100% Fish for Profit, 23-24th September.

As the industry looks to unlock more value from marine biomass, one of the biggest challenges remains scaling up without major capital risk. At the upcoming 100% Fish for Profit conference, Nofima’s Runar G Solstad will explore how this gap can be bridged in practice.

Central to this is Biotep, Nofima’s pilot-scale “mini-factory” in Tromsø. The facility enables companies to test and refine their own processes at production-relevant volumes, without committing to full industrial investment. By running test batches, businesses can validate performance, estimate costs and develop prototypes ready for market.

Biotep is designed to handle a wide range of raw and pre-processed marine biomass, supporting efforts to extract greater value from side streams. Outputs can include oils, protein concentrates and bioactive compounds, reflecting growing commercial interest in maximising resource use.

A key focus is the transition from lab-scale trials to larger volumes. Scaling from small batches to hundreds of kilograms introduces new technical challenges, and Biotep allows these to be addressed step-by-step, reducing both technical and financial risk.

Runar will share practical insights into this process, highlighting how companies can move from concept to commercial production more effectively.
