Thyborøn will be showcasing its new, versatile flying trawl door, ‘Flipper’ at DanFish.

Equipped with four adjustable foils, the spreading power can be reduced by 17% with 24% less resistance, making the same set of doors suitable for trawling for different species - for example herring, mackerel or blue whiting.
The angle of attack can also be significantly adjusted on this model to achieve a total reduction in spreading power of approximately 40%. The company says, “All in all you get two types/sizes of doors in one, less drag and a better spread. It’s so easy-going in the water that we call it the ‘Flipper’.”
Since its introduction, the Type 20 Flipper door has been tested in Holland, Denmark, Greenland and Iceland with great success, and the Flipper foil concept has been patented worldwide.
Two sets of 13m2 type 20 are in use in Holland by Cornelis Vrolijk and W. van der Zwan, fishing for herring and mackerel and with all foils closed they use the doors for blue whiting.
A set of 8.5m2 is also in use on the vessel Tobis in Denmark. Tobis is twin-rigging for shrimp in the North Sea and, with all the foils open, the vessel uses the doors for twin-rigging for cod/saithe on a smaller trawl with higher speed.
In Iceland, HB Grandi’s newbuild Venus has 15m2 doors and Birtingur has 7m2 doors. Both vessels are fishing for mackerel, herring and blue whiting. Venus has experimented by adjusting the Roll and Pitch position on the doors by opening/closing the foils with good results.
Greenland vessel Iliviliq is fishing for mackerel with 14m2 doors.
In August Thyborøn launched the first set of semi pelagic type 14vf doors made in a Flipper version that will be used for fishing for shrimp and white fish in Norwegian waters.
