New laws ensure Welsh cockling future

The Cockle Fishing Management and Permitting (Specified Area) (Wales) Order 2024 simplifies the existing law and gives the Welsh government new powers to manage each cockle fishery based on the health of the stock and the environment.

“Gatherers and local communities are proud of their heritage and this new legislation will promote cockle gathering as a legitimate and sustainable occupation for future generations,” said Cabinet Secretary for Climate Change and Rural Affairs, Huw Irranca-Davies said.

“This order will have a positive impact on well-being by supporting economic growth through the continued operation of long-standing and historically important fisheries.”

The latest legislation brings in new checks on permit applications to ensure cockle gathering is only undertaken by those with knowledge of how to work safely in intertidal environments.

Other measures include a fee for cockle gathering permits along with eligibility checks and the standardising of a daily recreational allowance.
