The European Commission is inviting feedback on a new initiative to help accelerate the energy transition of the EU fisheries and aquaculture sector.

The EU fisheries and aquaculture sector is energy intensive, relying heavily on fossil fuels making it vulnerable to fuel price increases caused, for example, by the war in Ukraine and the aftermath of the Covid pandemic.

Whilst crisis measures to support the industry have been put in place, longer term strategies are needed to make the sector more sustainable.

The Commission is therefore preparing a new initiative, to be presented early next year, which will:

  • enable strong engagement of all the people, authorities and organisations concerned
  • close the gaps in knowledge, technology and innovation
  • secure adequate financial support
  • ensure the right skills and workforce

All industry, non-governmental organisations, academic, scientific, social and economic partners, and citizens are being invited to share their views and have until 5 December 2022 to do so.
