Binghamton University, in conjunction with its dining partner Sodexo, has achieved Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) certification, becoming the first State University of New York (SUNY) campus to do so.

The MSC Chain of Custody certification process was led by Peter Napolitano, director of Auxiliary Services for Binghamton University. Certification means that students can now trace seafood purchases back through the supply chain to a fishery that has been certified as sustainable.

“Maintaining and developing sustainable practices within our Division of Student Affairs is of crucial importance to our students, faculty and staff,” said Mr Napolitano.

While Binghamton University is the first Sodexo campus dining programme in New York to achieve MSC certification and the first SUNY location to attain certification, Sodexo previously rolled out the MSC certification programme at client locations in the greater Washington DC area.

Clients include National Geographic, National Academy of Sciences, National Aquarium, The University of Mary Washington and George Mason University.

The estimated reach of these certified locations is more than one million consumers, helping Sodexo to raise awareness about its North American commitment to seafood sustainability.
