The latest of four 150 tonne automated feed barges being built for Scottish Sea Farms Ltd has been completed by Macduff Shipyards Ltd.

The 19.80m SSF/MD 1 was designed in close cooperation with the operator and Orbit GMT and is a new design developed by the yard to provide the best possible feeding platform with a strong emphasis on generous working space and visibility.

Over the past ten years, Macduff has been working more closely with the salmon industry working on various barge designs fitting them out with new feed systems and modifying deck layout to suit ever changing technologies and owner requirements.

This new vessel is the culmination of this experience and centres around a simple layout for the feed system to enable maximum efficiency.

It’s fitted with an Orbit GMT feed system which was fitted by the yard and commissioned by Orbit GMT which is controlled by a dedicated computer system situated in the wheelhouse.

A Broadcrown generator featuring a John Deere 6 cyl diesel engine provides the main 415/230v power in the barge. The generator is capable of developing 130kVa and is fitted within an acoustic enclosure to keep noise to a minimum.

The barge is also fitted with a Palfinger PK12000 MA deck crane for loading feed and general duties, a Bombas Azcue deck wash pump, submersible sump pumps for bilge duties, FW and Grey Water system with 1,000 litre storage tanks, LED lighting throughout and aircraft tyre fenders along each side and the stern.
