Flexabar was the first company worldwide to develop water-based antifouling coating for cage nets and is still a worldwide major supplier of traditional copper based antifouling, mostly water-based, but oil based is also available.
Flexabar is the main supplier of antifouling to North and South America as well as the Mediterranean area. The company is also an important supplier to Northern Europe: Scotland, the Faroe Islands, Finland and Sweden.
After having been out of the most important market in Europe – Norway – for 25 years, ProFlex made a sole representative agreement with one of the most important players, Refa Frøystad Group
With time Flexgard antifouling has been improved and the content of metals reduced, to create new and more environmentally friendly products with the same efficiency.
As aquaculture began to grow, so did the regulation of the coatings, as well as all products used in the aquaculture field. Flexgard is considered environmentally friendly, preferable to other copper-based paints and coatings because of the lower leach of biocide compared with other products in the market place.
Traditional copper paints for the aquaculture industry work on ablative and higher leach out levels of biocide, while Flexgard water-based products work on a controlled, very low leach out rate of 37.6mg/cm/day. This provides an equal and better performance than traditional copper paints containing 20-30% of copper oxide.
Flexabar is now introducing next generation of new antifouling coating products:
• Flexgard VI-MAXX with significantly less contents cuprox oxide and biocides
• Flexgard VII-HD especially strong against hydroids and mussels
• Flexgard VIII-CFR - non copper antifouling - with contents of biocides even less than VI-MAXX
• Flexprime - new primer for application before antifouling treatment
Flexabar has also developed a new coating - FLEXDIP - for use in organic fish farming.

At AQA, ProFlex introduce all new products except the traditional Flexgard antifouling products.
