Germany and Bulgaria have been given €211.8 million and €85 million respectively in EU funding to help promote sustainable fisheries and aquaculture and stimulate innovation and growth.

The European Commission has adopted the European Maritime, Fisheries and Aquaculture Fund (EMFAF) Programme for the countries and will implement the EU common fisheries policy and priorities outlined in the European Green Deal.

The total financial allocation for the German programme 2021-2027 is €302.6 million over the next six years, of which the EU contribution accounts for €211.8 million. Bulgaria’s allocation is €121 million, with the EU contributing €85 million.

“The adopted EMFAF programme will help contribute to the development of fishing and aquaculture communities, support the protection and restoration of aquatic biodiversity and ecosystems and strengthen sustainable sea and ocean management,” said Commissioner for Environment, Oceans and Fisheries, Virginijus Sinkevičius.

Allocations

In Germany 49% of the programme’s allocation will be dedicated to sustainable fisheries, 33% invested in sustainable aquaculture and in processing and marketing, 10% dedicated to the sustainable blue economy in coastal, island and internal regions and 2% invested in the strengthening of international ocean governance.

Bulgaria will allocate around 32% of the funds to sustainable fisheries, 40.8% will be invested in sustainable aquaculture and processing and marketing, 20% dedicated to the sustainable blue economy in coastal, island and internal regions and 1.2% invested in the strengthening of international ocean governance.
