Australian Seafood Industry support Tsunami aid relief
Australias seafood industry has announced that it has access to a registration system for offers of support to rebuild the counterpart industries in tsunami devastated regions. Federal agencies will match offers from Australia to requests for assistance from countries including Indonesia and Sri Lanka.
The Australian Seafood Industry Council (ASIC) says it hopes this latest step will lead to a speedy take-up of assistance from Australia.
“Importantly, we have a commitment that Ausaid will contact donors for gear needed, then facilitate and fund freight costs (capped),” says ASIC CEO Russ Neal
.”Needs to date have been mainly for medical aid, but now these countries are starting the huge task of rebuilding communities and industries.
“Seafood is an obvious first choice to for this rebuilding effort, as it provides both food and jobs,” he said.
