Vaagland Båtbyggeri AS has signed a contract for a new Skipskompetanse-designed research vessel for Uit Norges Arktiske Universitet.

The new coastal vessel that will replace the functions of the two current vessels Johan Ruud and Hyas. The 26.40 metre, 10 metre breadth research vessel is to be fitted out bottom fauna research as well as being equipped with trawling gear to research fish and other marine fauna. It will also be fitted out wth education and laboratory facilities.

“Vessels are important and absolutely necessary equipment for our students and researchers in arctic and marine subjects. We are pleased that in 2023 we can replace Johan Ruud and Hyas with a new and modern coastal vessel,” said Uit Norges Arktiske Universitet’s principal Anne Husebekk.

The hull will be built in Poland and is expected to arrive in Norway in the spring 2022 with final delivery to UiT in the autumn of the same year. Outfitting will be carried out at Vaagland Båtbyggeri’s covered hall.

The new research vessel will be used for education within the fields of Geo science, biology, fishing tool technology and navigation. Additionally, it will be used for collection of sea and port data and educational material.

Accommodation is for fourteen, including crew and the new research vessel is designed to incorporate two laboratories and an open and education-friendly bridge for navigation training. The research education facilities will be have capacity for groups of up to ten.

The deck layout includes deck crane, a pair of 8-tonne trawl winches and an 8-tonne net drum, a 5-tonne A frame aft, a 2-tonne CTD winch and a 2-tonne A frame on the starboard side.

Vaagland Båtbyggeri and Skipskompetanse are delighted that the vessel contract has come to Norway and that many local suppliers will be involved in the project.
