New test to detect Norovirus in oysters

PCR kit manufacturer Primerdesign has developed a new test for detecting Norovirus in oysters.

The genesig Easy-Oys kit can detect genogroups I and II in oyster tissue and can be used on site to identify contamination throughout the production line, reducing the risk to public health and minimising shellfish farm closures.

“Many farmers are under pressure to test for Norovirus in order to prevent an outbreak and risk consequent closure,” said Dr Stephanie Anderson, product manager, Primerdesign, part of the Novacyt Group.

Foodborne transmission is responsible for around 16% of Norovirus cases in the UK and oysters accumulate the virus in their digestive glands thanks to sewage outspills around their growing sites.

A small number of tests are performed by the Centre for Environment, Fisheries and Aquaculture Science in England and the Marine Institute in the Republic of Ireland but more testing is needed to better protect public health.

“The lack of approved commercially available tests currently available in the UK and limited accredited testing facilities often results in delays, presenting a significant challenge to the industry,” said Dr Anderson.

Developed in collaboration with oyster farmers and the Shellfish Association of Great Britain, the new genesig Easy_oys kit is specifically designed to test the digestive tissues of oysters and can detect GI and GII down to 500 copies/gram, delivering results within four hours.

The kit includes all the reagents needed to conduct viral testing in line with the ISO 15216 guidelines, without any prior lab experience.

“Due to the pollution of our coastal waters, this is much needed by our industry, as we strive to ensure we market a nutritious, wholesome and, crucially, safe product,” said David Jarrad, chief executive, Shellfish Association of Great Britain.
