America is to get a new $85 million wholesale fish market by the summer of 2003 it was revealed at the end of last month.
The new fully enclosed, temperature controlled 450,000 square foot operation will be built at the Hunts Point Food Distribution Centre in the Bronx borough of New York.
The new centre will replace the 160 year old Manhattan market as part of plans to create 200 more jobs in the city.
It will also offer 55 seafood dealers an additional 40,000 square feet over the current Manhattan site which currently yields $1 billion in sales annually.
Meanwhile the port of Nelson in New Zealand has recently been described as the seafood capital of New Zealand.
The New Zealand School of Fisheries has brought together women from countries such as Samoa, Tonga, Vauatu, The Cook Islands and Micronesia, to educate them in the handling of fish so they can sell them in local and international markets.
The port and surrounding area is ideal for training with big companies such as Sealord, Talley's and Sanford holding site visits. There are also several processing companies in the area.
