Spanish import/export seafood company Actemsa has achieved Friend of the Sea certification for traded skipjack, yellowfin and bigeye tuna.

All Actemsa certified tuna originates from pole and line and purse seine fleets already approved by Friend of the Sea for their sustainable fishing practices. These fishing methods are selective and do not affect the seabed. Onboard observers verify the compliance with sustainable fishing practices and live release of endangered species if any is accidentally bycaught.
Paolo Bray, founder and director of Friend of the Sea, said: “I have collaborated with ACTEMSA for the past 30 years on conservation of the marine habitat, starting with the Dolphin-Safe project and now as part of the Friend of the Sea certification. Its engagement has increased over the years and it is now part of ACTEMSA’s environmental policy.”
Eco-commitment
Nuria Noal from Actemsa added: “We are committed to the protection of the environment, the maintenance of marine biodiversity and the conservation of marine resources. We believe that being certified Friend of the Sea will provide certainty for our customers and final consumers that our products come from sustainable resources.”
ACTEMSA is one of the major driving companies of the Polígono Industrial de Tomada in Galicia, occupying an area of 12,000sqm.
It has established itself as a provider of seafood from sustainable fisheries at international level thanks to its strategic alliance with world leaders in the canning sector and by working closely with its Brazilian subsidiary, Industrias Alimenticias Leal Santos, also Friend of the Sea certified.
