Biological risk is of course part and parcel of the aquaculture experience, particularly in the offshore finfish area, and its effective management can make a measurable difference, as the Aquaculture – Driving Sustainable Growth Conference 2026 will be hearing.

Recently confirmed as a speaker at the 22 September gathering in Iceland, Dr. Bogdan Vornicu is a highly accomplished senior biologist with over 12 years of experience in water quality and environmental monitoring at both MOWI Canada West and Grieg Seafood BC.

In his presentation – provisionally entitled Turning Environmental Signals into Biological Risk Decisions – Bogdan will introduce Avascope, a structured methodology for managing biological risks such as biofouling, micro-jellyfish and harmful plankton blooms, a persistent and often under-managed constraint on production.

The session will focus on how varied environmental signals can be translated by Avascope into consistent decisions at a local level – reducing the gap between detection and response. Avascope gathers environmental signals, including satellite-derived indicators, in-situ measurements of, for example, nutrients and oxygen, and biological observations of fish physiology and behaviour.

These inputs are interpreted through a biological lens to judge if conditions are stable, deteriorating or actionable, resulting in a recommended course of action, improving both the lead time and confidence of operational decisions.

Bogdan’s work directly aligns with the themes of the IceFish 2026 Conferences, particularly in developing R&D methodologies for life support technologies and implementing real-time environmental risk reviews.
