A regional symposium is being organised to address the main issues related to sustainable small scale fisheries in the Mediterranean and Black Sea.

The first regional symposium is being organised by the General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean (GFCM) and takes place from 27 to 30 November 2013 at St Julian’s in Malta.

The overall aim is to improve the livelihoods of local communities engaged in small scale fisheries in the region, which play a large part in the fisheries sector overall.

Experts will look at enhancing value chains in the region, the integration of small scale fisheries in marine protected areas (MPAs), management and co-management options and the current strategies and methodologies for an effective analysis of the sector.

In addition, the symposium aims to implement tasks to support the sustainable development of small scale fisheries, establish a regional cooperation project, and lay the foundation for a platform where stakeholders can be directly involved in the management of the fisheries.

GFCM says the fisheries have the potential to contribute significantly to food security, economic growth and rural development and to provide valuable employment opportunities.
