Greek fish farming company, Kefalonia Fisheries S.A., has been certified as sustainable by Friend of the Sea for its sea bream, sea bass and meagre.

Only floating cages with a semi-automatic feeding system are installed at the farms, in order to reduce the impact on the surrounding ecosystem. The distance between the cages and the seabed allows for seabed protection. Neither GMO nor growth hormones are used.

An efficient traceability system is in place, so that the fish are fully traced from eggs, throughout their life on the farms, to the product line.

The two production sites are located on the island of Kefalonia, the largest of the Ionian Islands, between Italy and Greece. The company produces and sells eight million fry and over 3,000 tons of fish per year. Over 80% of the production is exported, mainly to France, Italy and Germany, as well as the United Arab Emirates and the USA.

"At Kefalonia Fisheries we understand that we are beholden to our environment and we are responsible for its care. We work to make the gentlest impression possible and we strive every day to leave it in a better state than when we began," said Dimitris Troianos, production manager of Kefalonia Fisheries. "For this reason, we are particularly fond of the Friend of the Sea certification, as it confirms our full engagement to sustainability."
