6% volume increase in Norway’s salmon exports
Norway has seen a 6% volume increase in Norwegian salmon exports since last year, said the Norwegian Seafood Council.
So far this year, Norway has exported 806,000t of salmon worth NOK52.3bn. This is an increase in volume of 6%, while the value has increased by 6% or NOK3.1bn from the same period last year, said the Council.
“There has been strong volume growth from both Norway and other salmon producing nations into the market. That increase in supply is the main reason why salmon prices in 2019 are somewhat below last year's level,” said Paul T. Aandahl, seafood analyst at the Norwegian Seafood Council.
Norway exported 109,000t of salmon for NOK6.1bn in September. This is a volume increase of 24%, while the value increased by 7% or NOK412m. The average price for whole fresh salmon in September was NOK50.08 per kg, compared with NOK 60.96 per kg in September 2018. So far this year, Poland, France and Denmark have imported the most salmon from Norway.
The Council noted that, led by fresh salmon, which is growing at 92%, it has seen positive development across all seafood export categories to the Chinese market.
Overall, Norway has exported 1.8m tonnes of seafood worth NOK76.2bn so far this year. This is a decrease of 7% in volume, but an 8%, or NOK5.5bn, increase in export value compared with the same period last year.
