    Support Assistant - Salmon Farming
  • Salary:
    From £18,720 per annum
  • Location:
    Ardmair

Founded in 1977, Wester Ross Fisheries is the oldest independent, owner-operated salmon farm in Scotland. Being independent, means farming how we think best:

  • In harmony with the natural environment
  • Reducing pressure on wild fish through innovative fish feed
  • Giving the fish room to grow up healthy without antibiotics
  • Championing the welfare of the salmon above all else

Our salmon are entirely hand reared, which means that our experienced farmers — no machines or cameras — are on the water every day to feed and observe the salmon. This level of care adds up to a great salmon you can be proud to serve and proud to call by name. Our company currently operates three seawater sites in Loch Kanaird, Loch Broom and Little Loch Broom. We also operate a processing unit in Dingwall and a sales and administration office in Auldearn.

The Position – Support Assistant:

Applications are invited to apply for the position of ‘Support Assistant’ predominantly based at our farm in Ardmair, Ullapool. The position available is full time and permanent, working Monday to Friday.

As a Support Assistant, your responsibilities will be varied, all with the aim of providing and maintaining the equipment and services that enable the farms husbandry staff to rear quality farmed salmon from smolt stage through to marketable size, i.e.

  • Maintaining and repairing buildings, pens, barges, boats, tools and other equipment used at any of the company’s sites.
  • Installing and maintaining support systems at sea such as acoustic deterrent devices and winter lighting.
  • Assisting in the lifting and changing of nets at sea.
  • Boat handling

The Person:

No formal qualifications are necessary but experience within a marine, engineering or agricultural background would be of benefit, as would be proven training in the use of telescopic and counterbalance forklifts.

The ability to fit in, and work within a small team with a wide range of demographics is essential. A practical person with common sense is required, and above all you should have the drive and ambition to further your career through training and development.

Applicants should be physically fit - most of the work is outdoors and there is a requirement to persevere often under severe weather conditions.

A current driving licence and access to transport is essential due to the location of our farms - there is the possibility of local shared accommodation being available at a discounted rate for applicants further afield.
