The science-based MSC environmental standard for sustainable fishing offers fisheries a way to confirm sustainability, using a credible, independent, third-party assessment process.

It means sustainable fisheries can be recognised and rewarded in the marketplace and gives an assurance to buyers and consumers that their seafood comes from a well-managed and sustainable source.

The general role of the Fisheries Officer is to support the MSC Fisheries Assessment Managers (FAMs) in ensuring the completion of fishery assessments and related work to the relevant standard as required.

Duties and responsibilities

Assist with Project Management

Assisting FAMS with managing fisheries projects: including but not limited to: delivery of outputs, liaising with assessment team members, clients and stakeholders; translating and interpreting (where applicable), report compiling, reviewing; and site visit coordination

  • Assist with the completion of pre-assessment, Fisheries Improvement Projects, full assessments, surveillances and other related assessments.
  • Act as an administrative support for the fisheries team, working jointly with the Fisheries Administrator.
  • Participate in training workshops and related professional development activities.
  • Escalating any potential issues to the Fisheries Assessment Manager and/or Fisheries Scheme Manager.
  • Undertake MSC online training and involvement as a project team member with the overall goal of becoming a qualified MSC Team Leader.

Point of Contact

  • Provide advice and assistance in response to enquiries received from both new and existing clients.
  • Liaise with Scheme Owners for any matters relating to the interpretation of the Certification Requirements.
  • Work with the MSC proactively in feeding back any issues or difficulties encountered with MSC online resources.

Compliance

  • Assist the Accreditation Manager in the timely resolution of non-conformities.
  • And any other duties that may be agreed between the post-holder and their manager.

Qualifications and Competencies

Education

  • University degree in fisheries or marine conservation biology, or natural resources or environmental management or relevant field e.g., economics, mathematics, statistics;

Skills and characteristics

  • Attention to detail and excellent organisational skills are vital.
  • Proficiency (to professional level) in English (written and spoken)
  • Good personal skills and the ability to communicate effectively with colleagues, clients and stakeholders.
  • Ability to multi-task and adapt to change.
  • Ability and willingness to acquire knowledge of auditing techniques in the gathering of information, the scoring of the fishery and carrying out stakeholder interviews
  • The ability to speak and write at a professional level in another language would be desirable (e.g. French, Spanish).

Mobility

The role may require travelling, therefore an up to date valid passport is essential. The role will be based in the Control Union Pesca Office (Lymington, UK),
