POSITION: Marine Lead Deck Hand / Boatswain

Plymouth Marine Laboratory (PML) is an internationally renowned marine research organisation delivering scientific research in climate change, marine pollution and sustainability.

We have an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic, experienced deck hand / boatswain with a passion for the environment to join our small, friendly team supporting marine research scientists in their work, including data collection. In addition to hands-on marine deck work you will be involved in mechanical and electrical maintenance activities, you will get involved in supporting the development of innovative new marine technologies including autonomous vehicles, computer based marine systems and green energies.

You will need to be physically fit spending up to 3 – 4 days a week at sea on our research vessel, the Plymouth Quest (22m) and will be required to undertake the MCA Approved Engine Certificate 1 (AEC1).

Key Deliverables for the post include:

  • Working PML’s vessels as a crew member. Involved in all deck work and maintenance, taking the lead where necessary.
  • Helping to maintain the mechanical and electrical capabilities of PML’s research vessels.
  • Undertaking sea-going deck work in support of PML’s science activities as required.
  • Supporting the Health and Safety policy of the Ships Services group but specifically in aspects related to working on the deck of a vessel at sea.
  • Providing marine experience support to PML science staff with particular focus on maintaining science infrastructure capabilities within PML group.
  • Provide clear communication about the ships mechanical and electrical capabilities to the Head of the Ships Services group and the Director of Science as appropriate.

Knowledge, skills and experience

  • Relevant, current deck experience either in the workboat or fishing industries would be desirable as working on deck in hazardous conditions is a necessary requirement of the tasks we perform.
  • Relevant MCA Approved mea survival, first aid and firefighting are desirable; training will be provided.
  • A demonstrable strong interest and aptitude for maintaining and mending marine equipment and infrastructure.
  • Sea-going experience working on the deck of a vessel will be an advantage.
  • Physically fit, able to spend prolonged periods at sea and there is a requirement for the successful candidate to pass an ENG1 medical.
  • A good work ethic with a methodical and proactive approach to problem solving.
  • Good communication skills are essential, both verbal and written.
  • A good team player.
  • A passion for the marine environment and environmental sustainability would be an advantage.
