{"id":9868,"date":"2016-05-05T11:02:00","date_gmt":"2016-05-05T10:02:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/worldfishing.nfdtesting.uk\/icefish-conference\/2016\/05\/05\/western-australia-invests-in-new-multi-species-shellfish-hatchery\/"},"modified":"2016-05-05T11:02:00","modified_gmt":"2016-05-05T10:02:00","slug":"western-australia-invests-in-new-multi-species-shellfish-hatchery","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.worldfishing.net\/icefish-conference\/news\/industry-news\/western-australia-invests-in-new-multi-species-shellfish-hatchery\/","title":{"rendered":"Western Australia invests in new multi-species shellfish hatchery"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The budget invests $2.3m in a new multi-species shellfish hatchery in Albany.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is expected the hatchery will be fully self-funded within ten years, once the industry has reached sufficient scale,\u201d said fisheries minister, Joe Francis.<\/p>\n<p>He continued: \u201cBy establishing a shellfish hatchery in Albany, the government is putting in place the foundation for the expansion of shellfish aquaculture throughout the state.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Western Australia\u2019s fisheries minister explained that the large-scale industry-run mussel and pearl production hatchery would be set up at the Albany Aquaculture Park, Frenchman\u2019s Bay.<\/p>\n<p>The budget also includes a further $1.3m to expand investor-ready aquaculture zones across the state.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Francis continued: \u201cIndustry feedback tells us there is a lack of access to spat, which is a major impediment to industry growth and sustainability.
