{"id":9386,"date":"2015-08-25T12:07:00","date_gmt":"2015-08-25T11:07:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/worldfishing.nfdtesting.uk\/icefish-conference\/2015\/08\/25\/mislabelled-shrimp-case-ends-in-conviction\/"},"modified":"2015-08-25T12:07:00","modified_gmt":"2015-08-25T11:07:00","slug":"mislabelled-shrimp-case-ends-in-conviction","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.worldfishing.net\/icefish-conference\/news\/industry-news\/mislabelled-shrimp-case-ends-in-conviction\/","title":{"rendered":"Mislabelled shrimp case ends in conviction"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Office of Law Enforcement, the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries and the U.S. Attorney\u2019s Office for the Eastern District of North Carolina joined forces to investigate and prosecute Alphin Brothers Inc., in a case that saw the company admit to falsely labelling tens of thousands of pounds of shrimp.<\/p>\n<p>U.S. Attorneys used the Lacey Act as the centre piece of their prosecution. Federal law makes it illegal to \u201cmake or submit any false record, account, or label for, or any false identification of, any fish or wildlife that has been or is intended to be imported, transported, purchased or received from any foreign country, or transported in interstate or foreign commerce.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe key to stamping out fish fraud is just what we see in this case,\u201d said Lisa Weddig, Secretary of the Better Seafood Board (BSB.) \u201cOfficials didn\u2019t need new laws or new rules and regulations to go after and ultimately convict this operation.
