Three of the Faroese vessels, Finnur Fr\u00ed\u00f0i FD86<\/i>, Jupiter FD42<\/i> and Tr\u00f3ndur \u00ed G\u00f8tu FD175<\/i> have just finished their quota using purse seine nets from V\u00f3nin. The latest one was delivered for Finnur Fridi <\/i>in January.<\/p>\n
These nets are specifically made for the conditions and environment that the fishery faces. The two months when most of the fish is caught – mid January to mid March – are very harsh and stormy with strong winds and raging seas. Thus, the nets need to be dimensioned accordingly with very heavy twine and large, strong floats. Fishing also takes place in waters as shallow as six fathoms, so most of the net (which is around 60 fathoms deep) is on the ground. This means that the lower part of the net has to be very strong.<\/p>\n
The feedback from the three vessels has been very good. V\u00f3nin reports that Finnur Fr\u00ed\u00f0i<\/i> has caught almost 8,000t with its 242×60 fathom net.<\/p>\n
One important thing in this fishery is to have good floatation on the nets, because the capelin drive them down. This results in a lot of fish escaping over the headrope when it sinks.<\/p>\n
