For years, Greenpeace and other environmental groups have tried to \u201cmischaracterise\u201d the Bering Sea Canyons, stating they\u2019re at risk of commercial fishing. <\/p>\n
Leading fast-food chain McDonald\u2019s is a supporter of the \u201cwild-caught and sustainable fishery\u201d, from where it sources its Alaska Pollock. <\/p>\n
As a result, Senator Murkowski is urging the president and CEO of McDonald\u2019s, Donald Thomson, to ignore the latest campaign, stating that \u201cnothing could be further from the truth\u201d, and noting that the Bering Sea Canyons \u2013 like all of Alaska\u2019s waters \u2013 are protected and sustainably managed.<\/p>\n
\u201cThere are two entities with responsibility for federal fisheries management off the coast of Alaska: the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and the North Pacific Fisheries Management Council,\u201d Ms Murkowski explained in a letter to Mr Thomson.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe North Pacific Council is recognised through the country for its dedication to utilising scientific research and data when making decisions\u2026 Both [agencies] have recently concluded this portion of the Bering Sea is not at risk from fishing activities,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n
