{"id":5733,"date":"2021-05-06T09:39:00","date_gmt":"2021-05-06T08:39:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/worldfishing.nfdtesting.uk\/icefish-conference\/2021\/05\/06\/looking-for-fish-with-bold-personalities\/"},"modified":"2026-08-26T23:55:49","modified_gmt":"2026-08-26T22:55:49","slug":"looking-for-fish-with-bold-personalities","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.worldfishing.net\/icefish-conference\/news\/aquaculture\/looking-for-fish-with-bold-personalities\/","title":{"rendered":"Looking for fish with bold personalities"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Researchers from the University of Stirling\u2019s Institute of Aquaculture, Loch Duart and Otter Ferry Seafish with support from the Sustainable Aquaculture Innovation Centre are studying the wrasse to determine how they react to new objects in their tank and whether this correlates with their ability to rid salmon of sea lice.<\/p>\n<p>Professor Herve Migaud from the University of Stirling\u2019s Institute of Aquaculture said that Ballan wrasse were very clever fish. \u201cIf you walk by a tank they will take an interest in you and watch you and follow,\u201d he said. \u201cEach has their own personality and we want to correlate which traits \u2013 namely boldness and shyness \u2013 translate into Ballan wrasse being reliable and effective at delousing salmon,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>The team will also be using hydroacoustic tracking of tagged fish to compare the behaviour of experienced wild wrasse and those reared in hatcheries.
