{"id":5700,"date":"2013-11-05T14:53:00","date_gmt":"2013-11-05T14:53:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/worldfishing.nfdtesting.uk\/icefish-conference\/2013\/11\/05\/faroe-islands-takes-the-eu-to-the-wto\/"},"modified":"2026-08-26T23:55:42","modified_gmt":"2026-08-26T22:55:42","slug":"faroe-islands-takes-the-eu-to-the-wto","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.worldfishing.net\/icefish-conference\/news\/industry-news\/faroe-islands-takes-the-eu-to-the-wto\/","title":{"rendered":"Faroe Islands takes the EU to the WTO"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The measures, introduced in August this year, ban imports of herring and mackerel products from the Faroe Islands into the EU and also deny access to EU ports by vessels transporting these products.<\/p>\n<p>The Faroe Islands say that the measures implemented by the EU are \u201cin clear contravention of basic provisions of the WTO Agreement\u201d and that the coercive measures implemented by the EU against the Faroe Islands appear designed to protect EU industry interests, not to conserve the Atlanto-Scandian herring.<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Prime Minister, Kaj Leo Holm Johannesen, said, \u201cThe EU is a major trading power while the Faroe Islands is very small indeed, with an economy and income heavily dependent upon fisheries, based on the export of fish products.
