Innovators from the worlds of science, technology and the fishing industry itself have been working together to make fishing safer, more transparent and more environmentally friendly.<\/p>\n
“It was fantastic to hear about all the exciting ways that collaborative efforts are improving the fishing industry,\u201d said Sheryll Murray MP, who chaired the event. \u201cInnovation has a very positive role to play in supporting the UK’s fishermen and our marine environment.”<\/p>\n
On the agenda were topics such as how technology can be used to help fishermen avoid unwanted bycatch and the use of technology on smaller, less well-financed vessels to help improve fishing safety where \u2018cost should never be an issue\u2019 according to Matthew Frow, who heads up Seafish\u2019s Kingfisher service.<\/p>\n
The disruption caused by Covid-19 and Brexit were, of course, discussed with Michael MacCorquodale from online sales platform Bullfish Market, seeing opportunities for the industry. \u201cIt has allowed us to go online with platforms such as Bullfish Market, host events like this one and educate each other on the opportunities for our industry to grow,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Also discussed was the need for collaboration within the sector to make fishing more efficient and sustainable whilst David Stevens, chair of Fishing into the Future, rounded off the talks by highlighting the need for transparency.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
