The Scottish Nephrops Working Group will investigate the challenges facing the sector and develop a long-term strategy to cement Scotland\u2019s position as a leading supplier of high quality langoustine.<\/p>\n
The sector has been badly affected by the pandemic and uncertainty around Brexit. \u201cThey are Scotland\u2019s second largest seafood export and the coronavirus pandemic has had a significant effect on the sector with markets remaining depressed and low prices throughout the supply chain,\u201d said Rural Economy Secretary, Fergus Ewing.<\/p>\n
\u201cNephrops are critically important to the future of our seafood sector and many coastal communities in Scotland, supporting thousands of local jobs,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n
The Scottish Nephrops fleet comprises 450 vessels, adding approximately \u00a380 million to the economy, the second highest value seafood product in Scotland.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe Scottish Nephrops Working Group will be critical to the sectors future,\u201d said chair of the Scottish Nephrops Working Group, Uel Morton. \u201cThe sector is one of the most fragile areas of Scotland\u2019s economy, yet it delivers so much in terms of employment and exports.\u201d<\/p>\n
