{"id":4633,"date":"2012-09-11T16:45:00","date_gmt":"2012-09-11T15:45:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/worldfishing.nfdtesting.uk\/icefish-conference\/2012\/09\/11\/industry-against-cmrn-proposal\/"},"modified":"2026-08-26T23:49:04","modified_gmt":"2026-08-26T22:49:04","slug":"industry-against-cmrn-proposal","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.worldfishing.net\/icefish-conference\/news\/industry-news\/industry-against-cmrn-proposal\/","title":{"rendered":"Industry against CMRN proposal"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Alliance believes that the Government\u2019s proposal \u201cplaces an unjust burden on Australia\u2019s fishing industry and regional communities, with no proper calculation of the impacts.\u201d It says that changes must be made to the Government\u2019s plan, otherwise businesses will fold, jobs will be lost and those remaining in the industry will be hit with higher fees to cover fisheries management costs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe issue here is not marine biodiversity. The Australian fishing industry supports biodiversity conservation \u2013 without it, there is no future for the industry,\u201d said Grahame Turk, chair of the National Seafood Industry Alliance.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFishing co-exists with conservation in Commonwealth waters right now under tightly regulated fisheries management and harvest strategies. The Government\u2019s plan does not get the balance right.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The commercial fishing industry\u2019s response to the Government\u2019s final version of the CMRN, highlighted not only the negative impacts on the industry, but also fundamental flaws it believes are present in the Government\u2019s calculations and processes.<\/p>\n<p>The Alliance claims that an independent review by Ernst &amp; Young examined the socioeconomic impact assessments produced by ABARES for the Government and concluded that the assessments were inadequate for the task of informing a major new policy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor major policy reforms, it should be standard practice to use a full cost benefit analysis,\u201d said Mr Turk. \u201cThe Government did not do that.
