The quay was initially closed to all fishing in September 2002 for two years. A further four two year period closures followed to allow local for fish stocks to be replenished. The Te R\u016bnanga o Kaikoura asked for an extension under section 186Bof the Fisheries Act 1996 until a long term management plan is in place which meets the needs of the Kaikoura community.<\/p>\n
Raewyn Solomon, Te R\u016bnanga spokesperson, said: \u201cWe do not want to see this area re-opened before a long-term management system is in place, as that would undermine the rebuilding of fish stocks and the work that Te R\u016bnanga and the community has put in over the last 10 years.\u201d<\/p>\n
She added: \u201cTe R\u016bnanga is encouraged by the widespread support from the local community for this r\u0101hui (closure), which shows the positive outcome that can be achieved when communities work together.\u201d<\/p>\n
Te R\u016bnanga has worked with coastal guardians group Te Korowai o Te Tai o Marokura since 2005. Together they have developed the Kaikoura Marine Strategy which is expected to be realised in late 2012.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
