{"id":4201,"date":"2012-01-03T13:39:00","date_gmt":"2012-01-03T13:39:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/worldfishing.nfdtesting.uk\/icefish-conference\/2012\/01\/03\/new-fao-director-general\/"},"modified":"2026-08-26T23:46:17","modified_gmt":"2026-08-26T22:46:17","slug":"new-fao-director-general","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.worldfishing.net\/icefish-conference\/news\/industry-news\/new-fao-director-general\/","title":{"rendered":"New FAO Director-General"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The new Director-General is pushing for a renewed focus on food security, offering to scale up FAO support available to low-income and food deficit countries &#8211; especially those facing protracted crises.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We will create teams that draw together the Organization&#8217;s skills in policy advice, investment planning, resource mobilisation, emergency response and sustainable development,&#8221; the Director-General said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Hunger eradication should not be separated from responses to other global challenges, such as reviving national economies, protecting natural resources from degradation, and mitigating and adapting to climate change,&#8221; he added.<\/p>\n<p>As Director-General, Graziano da Silva will aim for the eradication of hunger; sustainable food production and consumption; greater fairness in global food management; conclusion of FAO&#8217;s organisational reform to improve efficiency, transparency and accountability; and expansion of partnerships and South-South cooperation.<\/p>\n<p>The new Director-General succeeds Jacques Diouf of Senegal, who held the post from 1994 to 2011. He is the eighth person to head FAO.
