{"id":3952,"date":"2011-06-07T11:00:00","date_gmt":"2011-06-07T10:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/worldfishing.nfdtesting.uk\/icefish-conference\/2011\/06\/07\/hot-pursuit-of-tuna-seiner\/"},"modified":"2011-06-07T11:00:00","modified_gmt":"2011-06-07T10:00:00","slug":"hot-pursuit-of-tuna-seiner","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.worldfishing.net\/icefish-conference\/news\/industry-news\/hot-pursuit-of-tuna-seiner\/","title":{"rendered":"Hot pursuit of tuna seiner"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The organisation says that one of the vessels, the <em>Sainte Sophie Francois 2<\/em>, does not have a bluefin tuna quota for the 2011 season and is not allowed to take part in any such fishing operation, and says that the International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tuna (ICCAT) has confirmed this.<\/p>\n<p>Approximately one hour after leaving Malta, the four purse seiners with a quota turned off their Automatic Identification System (AIS) even though this is prohibited and they disappeared off the radar.<\/p>\n<p>The <em>Steve Irwin<\/em> dispatched its helicopter to fly over the area and spotted the <em>Sainte Sophie Francois 2.<\/em> No sooner did the helicopter fly over, the vessel turned off its AIS, changed course and started to head towards Tunisian waters.<\/p>\n<p>The other four vessels were the <em>Jean Marie Christian 6<\/em>, <em>Jean Marie Christian 7<\/em>, <em>Sainte<\/em> <em>Sophie 3<\/em> and <em>Cisberlande 5<\/em>. All have been allocated bluefin tuna quotas this year but their whereabouts are unknown at this point.<\/p>\n<p>The <em>Brigitte Bardot<\/em> is deep inside Libyan waters searching for poaching operations.<\/p>\n<p>Captain Lockhart Maclean reports that the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society is in contact with NATO forces regarding its movements and reporting to both ICCAT and the European Union Fishing Commission.<\/p>\n<p>The Sea Shepherd ships are patrolling the waters off the coast of Libya searching for tuna poachers taking advantage of the war in Libya to illegally catch endangered bluefin tuna.
