{"id":383,"date":"2018-06-20T08:53:00","date_gmt":"2018-06-20T07:53:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/worldfishing.nfdtesting.uk\/icefish-conference\/2018\/06\/20\/guiding-light-champions-green-fishing-practices\/"},"modified":"2026-08-26T23:28:04","modified_gmt":"2026-08-26T22:28:04","slug":"guiding-light-champions-green-fishing-practices","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.worldfishing.net\/icefish-conference\/news\/vessels-shipyards\/guiding-light-champions-green-fishing-practices\/","title":{"rendered":"Guiding Light\u00a0champions green fishing practices"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The pair trawler, ordered by Guiding Light Limited and parent company, Hull-based Andrew Marr International Limited, headed for Peterhead, where she will fish for whitefish alongside sister vessel <em>Guiding Star<\/em>, which was also built at Parkol in 2014.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe industry has been quite buoyant for four or five years now and looks set to remain that way,\u201d said skipper Gavin Thain, explaining that <em>Guiding Light<\/em> is the result of a growing fishing industry and an innovative approach to sustainable fishing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA lot of this is down to the effort fishermen like ourselves have put into technical measures such as more selective fishing gear that protects juvenile stocks, to ensure greater sustainability,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have been working closely with the Marine Management Organisation to get that right and adhere to their fishery landing obligations. We have CCTV cameras installed to record what we are catching and exactly how we are doing it, reducing waste and, as a result, bringing back better catches.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe retain all our waste onboard, such as plastic, and don\u2019t discard anything into the sea other than biodegradable items. While this isn\u2019t a legal requirement yet, we see it as a moral one, and through our \u2018garbage plan\u2019 we are aiming to lead industry practices.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He commented that <em>Guiding Light<\/em> is similar to sister vessel <em>Guiding Star<\/em>, with some minor improvements made, including tweaks to the catch handling system and a higher icemaker capacity.<\/p>\n<p><em>Guiding Light<\/em> has been designed by Ian Paton of SC McAllister &amp; Co, with Gavin Thain closely involved with the design from the outset. He has been visiting Parkol regularly throughout the build since the keel was laid.
