{"id":2857,"date":"2009-11-11T14:58:00","date_gmt":"2009-11-11T14:58:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/worldfishing.nfdtesting.uk\/icefish-conference\/2009\/11\/11\/iccat-must-act-to-protect-albacore-stocks\/"},"modified":"2009-11-11T14:58:00","modified_gmt":"2009-11-11T14:58:00","slug":"iccat-must-act-to-protect-albacore-stocks","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.worldfishing.net\/icefish-conference\/news\/industry-news\/iccat-must-act-to-protect-albacore-stocks\/","title":{"rendered":"ICCAT must act to protect albacore stocks"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\u201cThe science doesn\u2019t lie &#8211; North Atlantic albacore has still not recovered from previous overfishing and ICCAT is going to have to address that fact,\u201d said Dr William Fox, WWF \u2013 US, VP for Fisheries and ISSF Board member.<\/p>\n<p>Just last month ICCAT\u2019s Standing Committee on Research and Statistics (SCRS) \u2013 the scientific body that closely monitors the health of tuna stocks and ecosystems \u2013 warned that previously enacted conservation measures are not enough to bring the stock back. The SCRS recommended further reducing the catch.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPreviously, nations recognised North Atlantic albacore needed help rebuilding and together leaders acted on the full advice of scientists,\u201d ISSF President Susan Jackson said. \u201cContinuing that kind of science-based leadership is what will help reverse this stock\u2019s declining health.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The ISSF Board of Directors is also calling on ICCAT to commission an assessment of Mediterranean albacore. What the SCRS calls incomplete figures show fishermen harvest thousands of tons a year but there has never been an assessment of the stock.
