{"id":2087,"date":"2007-06-11T12:01:00","date_gmt":"2007-06-11T11:01:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/worldfishing.nfdtesting.uk\/icefish-conference\/2007\/06\/11\/important-agreement-for-the-recovery-of-eel-stocks\/"},"modified":"2007-06-11T12:01:00","modified_gmt":"2007-06-11T11:01:00","slug":"important-agreement-for-the-recovery-of-eel-stocks","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.worldfishing.net\/icefish-conference\/news\/industry-news\/important-agreement-for-the-recovery-of-eel-stocks\/","title":{"rendered":"Important agreement for the recovery of eel stocks"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&#8220;It means that it is now possible to start implementing the measures which are needed to allow the stocks of European eel to recover&#8221;, declared Horst Seehofer, Federal Minister of Food, Agriculture and Consumer Protection, today in Luxembourg, following the vote on the measures to replenish the stock of European eel.<\/p>\n<p>The Minister had made adopting the eel protection regulation a priority of the German EU Council Presidency in the fisheries area. \u201cIt was a matter of urgency, as, according to estimates by the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea, the stock of European eel is outside its biological limits,&#8221; said Seehofer. \u201cThe agreement reached today is therefore a great success for the stock of European eel.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Measures to protect this fish stock had been discussed at European level since the European Commission\u2019s communication to the Council and the European Parliament of 1 October 2003.<\/p>\n<p>However, the consultations came to a standstill in 2006, as the Member States\u2019 opinions differed too greatly. It was at the time not possible to reconcile the divergence in interests between the \u201cNorthern countries\u201d on the one hand, interested more in catching adult eels, and the \u201cSouthern countries\u201d such as France and Spain on the other, interested more in glass eels.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>We have reached a great achievement.
