The Japanese government yesterday presented a new proposal for what they claim is \u201csmall scale\u201d coastal whaling, but rather than continue to call it science, it is now being referred to as \u201ccommunity whaling\u201d. However, the plan remains unaltered \u2013 to catch 220 whales, despite having virtually no market, no scientific justification, and no community benefit.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis is a clear sign that \u2018normalisation of the IWC\u2019 simply means continuing with the current situation \u2013 catch as many whales as possible,\u201d said Junichi Sato, Greenpeace Japan whale campaigner. \u201cNo new ideas have come from this meeting. The only concrete proposals are to have secret ballots at the IWC, to hold closed meetings, to exclude NGO\u2019s where possible, and to keep catching the same number of whales.\u201d<\/p>\n
Greenpeace says that it is clear the IWC needs to be modernised \u2013 to increase transparency, and to explore ways to protect whales for the future.
