The Vónin Grid was mounted in the portside trawl, while the starboard trawl had another grid with the same amount of space between the bars.

Skipper Andrew Titus said of the grid: “We had an opportunity to try one of Vónin’s new shrimp grids. On the first 105t we caught with twin trawls, the Vonin shrimp grid out-fished our regular grid by 30t. After that we were hooked on it. On short tows of two hours or less it would almost double our regular grid. On tows from two to four hours it still out-fished our regular grid by one and a half to two tons. We found the Vónin grid to be of excellent construction and easy to deal with on deck and look forward to using it in the future.”

Vónin shrimp grid

In many areas, vessels are required to use a grid, for example when fishing shrimp in Canada, Greenland and Norway. Vónin has its own plastic grid for this purpose. With the vertical bars raised over the horizontal ones, there is nothing going across the sorting surface, and this means close to optimum sorting. The bars can easily be replaced if damaged or bent. The frame of the grid is also very solid and strong.

Some skippers call the grid a revolution, because it has a much better water flow and catching capability than other grids on the market.

The Greenland vessel Akamalik mounted the old grid in one trawl and the new Vónin shrimp grid in another and they could see that the trawl mounted with the new grid had a greater catch and sorting of shrimps in the bag in every tow.

New herring trawl

The Faroese pelagic trawler Finnur Fríði has received its new 1856m hex mesh herring trawl.

The trawl is custom-made for the 11,000 horse power vessel. The forenet is spliced from the new double braided Super-12 net twines. The head rope is Dyneema and the foot rope is chain with polyester cover. The belly is made from braided nylon netting.

One of the largest and most modern shrimp trawlers in Canadian waters is the Mersey Phoenix owned by Mersey Seafoods Ltd.

[15
["post-11350","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-fishing-gear
["GET
