{"id":1065,"date":"2018-11-26T14:46:00","date_gmt":"2018-11-26T14:46:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/worldfishing.nfdtesting.uk\/icefish-conference\/2018\/11\/26\/gardar-engine-refit-promises-nox-and-fuel-savings\/"},"modified":"2026-08-26T23:32:09","modified_gmt":"2026-08-26T22:32:09","slug":"gardar-engine-refit-promises-nox-and-fuel-savings","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.worldfishing.net\/icefish-conference\/news\/power-propulsion\/gardar-engine-refit-promises-nox-and-fuel-savings\/","title":{"rendered":"Gardar engine refit promises NOx and fuel savings"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Owned by Gardar AS, the 1998-built <em>Gardar<\/em> has an 18-cylinder V-configuration W\u00e4stsil\u00e4 32 main engine that has worked hard over the years, and this will now be replaced by the 10-cylinder W\u00e4rtsil\u00e4 31 engine, which is also in a V-configuration, and which is seen as the world\u2019s most effective medium-speed diesel engine.<\/p>\n<p>As part of the package, <em>Gardar<\/em> will be installed with W\u00e4rtsil\u00e4 NO<sub>x<\/sub> Reducer emission after-treatment system with a compact silencer, and the propulsion layout will also be upgraded.<\/p>\n<p>The refit is expected to result in a reduction to the pelagic vessel\u2019s annual fuel consumption of 200,000 litres, as well as making a significant difference to its environmental footprint with an annual reduction of 88 tonnes of NO<sub>x<\/sub>.<\/p>\n<p>Lower fuel costs and NO<sub>x<\/sub> fees, combined with the longer service interval of the W\u00e4rtsil\u00e4 31 engine, is expected to result in significantly lower operating costs. The Norwegian NO<sub>x<\/sub> Fund has committed a substantial amount of support for this project, resulting in a very satisfactory repayment period.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are extremely happy to be able to make <em>Gardar<\/em> more ecologically sound. The investment in retrofitting the vessel will quickly pay itself back in terms of reduced fuel costs and NO<sub>x<\/sub> fees.
