Trident vessel trials Ibercisa winches
American shipowners from Seattle oversee the trials
Trials of Ibercisa’s trawl winches are taking place in Vigo, overseen by a delegation of American shipowners, prior to installation onboard Trident Seafoods’ ‘Kodiak Enterprise’.
The two 440kW electric trawl winches will be installed onboard the Kodiak Enterprise which operates in the Bering Sea and the Aleutian Islands catching Alaska pollock and Pacific hake. Each winch has a stowage capacity of 2,000m of 35 mm wires and a pull of 57,800 tonnes. The efficiency of electric ignition is around 85% to 90% – more efficient than a hydraulic system which is between 50% and 70%.
Nieves García Figueira, communication manager, Ibercisa, told World Fishing: “Trident Seafoods is the first seafood company in the USA and this is the first contract for Ibercisa with this company. USA fishing companies are changing their hydraulic systems to electric systems and Ibercisa is well positioned in this technology. The USA Government is expected to change the legislation so that building new trawlers will be allowed so; the market will be wider for Ibercisa.”
The electrically driven winches offer better control and a number of benefits including cost saving advantages due to the reduced installation cost, energy consumption, maintenance and noise levels which improves the health and safety of workers.
A representative from American Seafoods and Naust Marine who helped design the electrical drive for the deck machinery were also present to oversee the trials.
