Cefas has announced that it plans to extend its shellfish testing services to cover algal biotoxins.

It will launch its Amnesic Shellfish Poisoning (ASP) testing service in October. This will be launched through its commercial branch, Cefas Technology Limited (CTL), which will also add further testing services over the next year, including testing for Paralytic Shellfish Poisoning and Lipophilic Toxins.

Cefas says that eating shellfish contaminated with biotoxins may pose health risks, as well as risks to the industry. By undertaking algal biotoxin testing, these risks can be limited, says Cefas.
