First British certified sustainable plaice
Direct Seafoods is set to be the first supplier to offer British certified sustainable plaice.
This follows the successful MSC certification of The Hastings Fishermen’s Protection Society plaice fishery, the first fishery in Britain to receive MSC certification for the species.
Laky Zervudachi, group sustainability director of Direct Seafoods said, “Sustainability is at the core of our business. The kitchens we supply are increasingly concerned with offering quality seafood sourced in a way that protects the oceans.”
He added: “We have worked with The Hastings Fishermen’s Protection Society for some time now and are delighted to be the first to supply British MSC certified plaice, offering customers an even wider eco-friendly choice.”
Operating from 27 boats on the picturesque Stade beach, from where fishing boats have operated for over a thousand years, it is one of the oldest beach-launched fishing fleets in the UK.
Hastings MSC Dover sole and herring is already available in a wide range of restaurants across the UK as well as some local restaurants and fishmongers.
George Clark, UK commercial manager for the MSC, explained: “Suppliers such as Direct Seafoods, who focus on providing MSC certified seafood, are helping to protect not only the oceans but the industry itself.”
He concluded: “It’s great news that Direct Seafoods are listing Hastings MSC certified plaice, helping to distribute a fantastic British caught sustainable fish across kitchens from fish and chips shops to Michelin-starred restaurants.”
