The Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) Canada, Gulf Region, has announced the sentences imposed to four Prince Edward Island lobster harvesters for violating the fisheries regulations.

In Summerside Provincial Court on 3 March 2010, Sidney Gavin, Seacow Pond; Michael Dorgan, Seacow Pond; Wade Gavin, Anglo Tignish; and David Gaudet, Anglo Tignish, all pleaded guilty to having illegally fished lobster in a closed lobster fishing area.

Provincial Court Judge Jeff Lantz imposed the following fines to the four individuals: 

  • Sidney Gavin, $10,000 fine, forfeiture of 3 traps, and 145 days in jail for default of payment
  •  Michael Dorgan, $10,000 fine, forfeiture of 3 traps, and 145 days in jail for default of payment
  •  Wade Gavin, $6,500 fine, forfeiture of 3 traps, and 94 days in jail for default of payment
  •  David Gaudet, $4,000 fine, forfeiture of 3 traps, and 58 days in jail for default of payment
