Data Data Analyst

The post provides an opportunity to join an internationally respected, dynamic and active team conducting and leading on fisheries science, assessments and management advice to national and international marine management organisations.
You will have responsibility for providing technical and analytical support to fisheries scientists; analysing fisheries and biological databases to extract specific data and perform specified analyses for projects servicing a variety of customers, develop innovative queries and programs to meet demands, and display requested information in new and appropriate ways as required through computer analysis, GIS and database support as part of a multi-disciplinary team. Overseas travel is to be expected with a possibility of participating in fieldwork
MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Key work areas include monitoring and assessment of fish and shellfish stocks, their associated environment, and the impact of fishing on ecosystems and the impact of environmental change on fish and shellfish stock productivity.
You will support the development and management of scientific analyses and provide analytical and advisory support for the assessment of marine fish stocks, the marine environment, and associated fisheries and management options.
Duties will include development and application of innovative queries and programmes for data analysis in support of fisheries and ecological modelling, numerical programming, statistical analyses, report writing and presentation of work to a wide range of national and international customers.
Academic qualifications required for this Cefas Pay Band 4 post are a degree with a high level of numerical programming content or relevant work experience.
In addition you will have experience of analysing large and varied datasets, knowledge and experience of high level programming languages, knowledge of ecology and/or biology. You will be innovative, well-motivated and flexible with good written and verbal communication skills. The ability to explain complex solutions to non-specialists is essential. Experience in identifying problems, and the ability to demonstrate a high degree of familiarity with packages such as R, is essential. You will be able to work effectively as part of an interdisciplinary team and be willing to travel both nationally and internationally to work directly with the organisations involved in this research. The post requires fieldwork at sea on research and commercial vessels. You will have knowledge of fisheries, management of ecological or renewable resources and experience with national collaboration.
It is desirable that you also have:
- Experience in collaborating with other scientific institutes.
- Experience of assessment of, or research, on the impacts of human activities in the marine environment.
- The ability to identify additional national or international research opportunities in fisheries ecology research.
